John is the President and CEO of EnerVest, Ltd., which has acquired with institutional investors more than $2 billion in oil and gas properties since 2005. EnerVest currently operates more than 18,000 wells in 12 states. He is also Chairman and CEO of EV Energy Partners, L.P., a NASDAQ-listed master limited partnership. During his tenure as President and COO of Torch Energy, the company grew from $200 million in assets to $1 billion. He was responsible for the creation of Nuevo Energy Company and its IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. Previous to that, John raised $136 million to participate in more than 1,000 wells and in 1985 created Walker Energy Partners, an American Stock Exchange Company. John was selected by Institutional Investor as an "All American" energy analyst for six years in a row. John served the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) as Chairman from 2003-2005. In May 2000, he was recognized with the IPAA's Leadership Award for his contribution to the industry. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council and serves or has served on the boards of the Houston Producers' Forum, Foundation for Energy Education, Houston Petroleum Club, Offshore Energy Center, and the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association. Other special interests include coaching more than 30 soccer, basketball, and baseball teams for His civic activities include serving as Chairman of the Board of Stewards of Chapelwood United Methodist Church and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boys Scouts of America. In 2001, he received the Silver Beaver Award and in May 2007 the Distinguished Eagle from the Boy Scouts of America. In 2004, he was named Distinguished Alumni at Texas Tech University. He holds a BBA (with honors) from Texas Tech University and a MBA (with distinction) from New York University.
