Mr. McWhorter’s healthcare career began as an assistant administrator of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia. He also served as administrator of Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus, Georgia, and West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Georgia. Mr. McWhorter serves as Chairman of Clayton Associates, LLC, which he founded in January 1996 to provide venture capital to start-up companies. In 1996 McWhorter also created LifeTrust America, Inc., a developer and operator of assisted living communities, and served as its Chairman until its sale in November 2004. Mr. McWhorter participated in the formation of HealthTrust, Inc., in September 1987, and served as Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer until the HealthTrust merger with Columbia/HCA in April 1995. He was responsible for the overall leadership and management of HealthTrust, Inc., with regard to strategic planning, corporate management, and external affairs. From April 1995 to May 1996, Mr. McWhorter served as Chairman of the Board of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation and remained a board member until May 2000. Prior to the formation of HealthTrust, Inc., McWhorter served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) from 1985 until September 1987. McWhorter joined HCA in 1970 as administrator of Palmyra Park Hospital in Albany, Georgia. In 1973 he was promoted to division vice president, and in 1976, he joined HCA’s executive management staff as senior vice president of Domestic Operations. McWhorter became executive vice president in 1980, adding international operations to his responsibilities in 1983, and continued in that position until becoming President and Chief Operating Officer in 1985.He currently serves on the Advisory Board of the McWhorter School of Pharmacy as well as the Board of Overseers at Samford University.In 2008 McWhorter founded PharmMD, served as chairman, and currently serves on its board. He also is a member the Harpeth Capital Advisory Board. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Belmont University as well as Samford University’s Board of Overseers, having served as its inaugural chairman. McWhorter continues to serve as a Trustee for the Middle Tennessee Council Boy Scouts of America. He served as a director of SunTrust Bank – Nashville; Ingram Industries Inc.; Chairman of Gordian Health Solutions until its sale; Chairman of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority and as Vice Chairman of the Trustees for The University of Tennessee.He was a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives; former President and Chairman of the Federation of American Health Systems, a national organization that represents investor owned hospitals, which in 1997 awarded him its first Life Time Achievement award. He is also a former member of the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association. Mr. McWhorter is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation of State Legislatures and former Trustee of the Committee for Economic Development. He served as President of the Middle Tennessee Council of Boy Scouts of America for the year 2000 and served as Chairman in 2001. He served as the 1997 Friends of Scouting Overall Chairman for the Middle Tennessee Chapter. McWhorter served for eight years on the Board of United Way of Middle Tennessee, serving as its 1991 campaign chairman, and the 1994 campaign chair for the United Way of Middle Tennessee‘s Alexis de Tocqueville Society. In 1990, McWhorter joined Belmont University in the formation of the Peer Learning Network. In 1996, McWhorter and Belmont University collaborated to create the Center for Entrepreneurship to meet the need for counsel and resource referral for individuals involved with start-up ventures, with a focus on women entrepreneurs. In 2000 the Center advanced its strong commitment to entrepreneurial women and created Women’s Program, which serves as a catalyst to expand leadership and economic opportunities by advancing entrepreneurship through educational programs, forums, and resource referral. Mr. McWhorter is a founding member of the Nashville Healthcare Council and the Chamber of Commerce’s Partnership 2000. Mr. McWhorter is co-author of MANAGEMENT DIMENSIONS: NEW CHALLENGES OF THE MIND. McWhorter attended The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, pre-pharmacy 1951-52, and earned his B.S. degree in pharmacy in 1955 from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1993, Samford University bestowed upon him the honorary degree, Doctor of Commerce.
