Steve serves as a Venture Partner of S3 Ventures. Steve is a pioneer in venture capital, arising from his distinctive track record in backing legendary venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins and co-investing in several of their outstanding companies — such as Genentech, Hybritech and Tandem — while serving as vice president of venture capital at The Hillman Company. The Hillman Company was the founding limited partner of Kleiner Perkins, and Mr. Banks served as the liaison for the first three KPCB partnerships. Steve is also a pioneer in the life sciences. In 1988, he became president of BCM Technologies (“BCMT”), where he was involved in the formation of more than 30 new technology companies spun out of the Baylor College of Medicine (“BCM”), including: Lexicon (LEXG), GeneMedicine (VLTS), ForeFront (SKIL), Triplex (AGEN), PrimaCis (MDLIQ) and Zonagen (ZONA). He also established BCMT’s venture fund and led BCMT’s venture advisory board, consisting of prominent investors such as Oxford Biosciences, Domain Associates, Versant, VenRock, EuclidSR, ARCH, J&J Development and Polaris. Steve earned a BS in physics from the Massachusetts' Institute of Technology (MIT) and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He taught a graduate venture capital course at Rice University during the years 1992 to 2005.
