Mr Selvam started his career with the Indian Overseas Bank and has 36 years banking experience with special focus on risk management, organisational structuring, and human resources. Mr Selvam is the Principal Programme Adviser at Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, Chandigarh. Mr Selvam was a former Chairman of the Indian Banks Association and SWIFT in India (1997-2000). Mr Selvam was also a former Chairman & Managing Director of Union Bank of India (1993-2000) and served as Executive Director and later as Managing Director & Chairman of Bank of India (1990-1993). Mr Selvam sat on several government committees, the Planning Commission and various Reserve Bank of India committees as a member or as chairman, and was previously a member of the Board of several public sector companies.
