Bio

Bill Bertrand serves as executive vice president, general counsel at MedImmune and is a member of MedImmune's executive leadership team. Mr. Bertrand currently has responsibility for legal affairs, regulatory affairs, corporate development, and MedImmune Ventures, the wholly-owned venture capital fund within the AstraZeneca Group. During his tenure at MedImmune, Mr. Bertrand has also had oversight for public affairs functions including external and internal communications, government relations, and advocacy. Mr. Bertrand also served as MedImmune's first corporate compliance officer from 2008 to 2010. Mr. Bertrand was appointed the first general counsel of MedImmune in September 2003 after joining in 2001 as vice president, legal affairs. Under his leadership, MedImmune's legal affairs department has grown from 4 members to more than 50, covering all aspects of legal matters including intellectual property, transactions, contracting, compliance, promotional work, and litigation. Prior to joining MedImmune, Mr. Bertrand served in legal positions at Pharmacia Corporation from 1997 to 2001, including litigation counsel, senior corporate counsel and associate general counsel. He had also been associate general counsel for a life insurance company and a partner at Dickinson, Wright, Moon, Van Dusen & Freeman of Lansing, MI. He has admissions to Michigan, Wisconsin, U.S. District Court, Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Bertrand currently serves on the company boards of Trustwave and Inotek. He previously served on the board of Brain Cells, Inc. He is also member of the board of directors for the Tech Council of Maryland and the Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education (MCBRE). He is also a member of the Health Corp. Compliance Association, the American Corporate Counsel Association, American Bar Association and American Health Lawyers Association. He has lectured at Seton Hall University School of Law and currently serves as an adjunct professor for biotech strategy in Johns Hopkins University's Carey School of Business. Mr. Bertrand holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from Wayne State University and a juris doctorate (cum laude) from University of Wisconsin - Madison.
